More than 85% of the working population takes part in agriculture; most commonly subsistence farming. In 2024, earnings from export covered only a quarter of imports; well below the Sub-Saharan average. Coffee and tea exports are largely in decline, making our involvement in the production and exportation of coffee vital for not only the communities that grow coffee, but for the wider economy. Ensuring that the consumer market is aware of the fantastic coffees produced in Burundi, may allow the sector to grow.
Over 60% of the Burundian population live on less than 2.15 USD per day. Less than half of all children finish primary school, and chronic malnutrition impacts the lives of more than half of children under 5 years old.
